Questions to all of us.

A group recently spent five days visiting with the Dalai Lama focusing upon what they believe are the five most important questions to be considered as we move into the millenium. The five questions were:
1. How do we address the widening gap between rich and poor?
2. How do we protect the earth?
3. How do we educate our children?
4. How do we help Tibet and other oppressed countries and peoples of the world?
5. How do we bring spirituality (deep caring for one another) through all disciplines of life?

In response to these questions I offer some possibly simplistic yet equally complex solutions.

1. How do we address the widening gap between rich and poor?

By implimenting an idea that has been around since the 1880's : From each according to his abilities, from each according to his needs.

2. How do we protect the earth?

By ridding ourselves and Western culture of the antiquated idea of "man vs. nature" and embracing the idea of man in harmony with nature. There is a belief among most native peoples of the western hemisphere that the earth is our mother, and as she gave us life, we, in turn, must preserve her life to bring forth all of those not yet born. We are but brief residents of this world and it has existed for milenia, let us think now of those a millenia from now and leave them a place they can call home, with all the natural wonders we enjoy.

3. How do we educate our children?

We must educate our children as much by actions as words. A very wise man said "Never seperate the words you speak from the life you lead". If we want our children to learn the values of tolerance, charity, peace, and many, many others, we must practice these with diligence at every moment, for we never know when our children may be listening and watching.

4. How do we help Tibet and other oppressed countries and peoples of the world?

There is only one way and that is by establishing a world wide government, with one representative from each nation in the world, including those who are currently under occupation by agressive and power hungry dictators. One voice among many, with all be equal. This is the only way.

5. How do we bring spirituality (deep caring for one another) through all disciplines of life?
Only by putting to rest, once and for all, the idea of religion. Religion divides, causes conflict. Spirituality unites, brings peace. Through education, mutual respect and the eridication of dogma can this be achieved.
